Responses to the environment

This is the largest topic we do this year. It is worth 5 credits in the External Examinations, so we spend more time on it. The way each of your teachers will teach this varies, but you will all end up covering the same content, it will just be in a different order!!!

One approach staff take is to divide the material into four sections:
  • Animal responses to the Biotic environment
  • Animal responses to the Abiotic environment
  • Plant Responses to the Biotic environment
  • Plant responses to the Abiotic environment

The other approach staff take is in line with NZQA requirements:
  • Time & Rhythm responses (Abiotic)
  • Spatial responses (Abiotic)
  • Interspecific relationships (Biotic)
  • Intraspecific Relationships (Biotic)

As an introduction to this topic you need to have some understanding of the basics of behavioural responses. You will also need to know how organisms sense and respond to the environment.

Behaviour of Organisms

"Behaviour" relies on our ability to observe and then interpret the meaning of the observations. Below is a Sway presentation on behaviour.

A good doco to view is about a full hour and goes into detail of how plants respond and communicate. ... just search on Youtube: What plants talk about. It's Great!!
Timing Responses
Taxes, Kinesis, Homing and Migration
Intraspecific Responses
Interspecific Responses
