Plant & Animal Adaptation: Diversity
This is an internally assessed project.
The main focus is to compare how theses animals are different in the way are adapted. You then need to discuss what advantages or disadvantages these differences provide to the success or otherwise of your organisms.
But.......You won't find the answers in a text or on the Web... You will need to put your own thinking hat on and be the expert!! Go ahead give it your best shot!!

Diversity
Diversity is about DIFFERENCES.
All animals carryout the same life processes, (MRS GREN) but how they do it is often unique for each species. The variety reflects the different specializations and adaptations that the organism has. The more successful an organism is, the more offspring it will have and therefore the species will survive well.

Some hints for success
READ THE TASK!!!
Step One: Choose your animals from the list. Check with your teacher that you have it correct Step Two: Revise material on adaptation Step Three: Revise Processes involved in the topic. Step Four: Focus on researching what is special your chosen animals. Use a graphics organiser to help. Step Five: Read the task and start assembling your report. Step 6: Check you have covered all aspects of the task. Edit and proof read. Print off final copy. Finished!! Congratulations!! |
Underwater Diving ability in Mammals
You will be comparing how 2 different mammals are able to cope with diving underwater. You will be investigating their differing abilities to carryout Gas Exchange and how their circulatory system differ to enable them to dive deeply into the ocean.
Air breathing Mammals with an aquatic way of life require a number of specialized features or adaptions to enable them to be able to be successful.
The main problem that air breathing mammals have to cope with is ensuring an adequate supply of oxygen to the cells. This is because the cells require oxygen for respiration and energy production. This is a pretty big issue for mammals because of their constant high body temperature and their high rate of metabolism. This causes a high demand for oxygen. In addition when resurfacing there is an added risk of decompression sickness, commonly called "The Bends".
Diving Mammals such as whales, dolphins and seals are extremely well adapted for diving deeply into the ocean. However humans are poorly adapted for diving.
