3.1 A Biological Investigation
Overview
All classes go daily to The Glen Aquaculture Facility for 2 school days to carryout their individual investigations. Richard De Hamel from the Marine Studies Centre runs the programme in conjunction with Cristina Armstrong from The Cawthron Institute. The College is supported by The Cawthron Institute and by NMIT during this time. We are VERY lucky and spoilt to be able to use this facility. Students are guided through the process of developing and then carrying out their own individual investigations using the facilities and organisms at The Glen. 2019 picsPics of us in 2016!!2015 Pics

The famous "Sand Box" is pictured below. This piece of equipment was designed by scientists at The Glen specifically to test mussel responses to temperature. Hot water is pumped in one direction in pipes through the sand, and cold water is pumped in the opposite direction. (Heat exchange system)This sets up a nice temperature gradient!! Pretty simple but very effective!
The perspex channels we call De Hamel channels... they were made and designed by Richard De Hamel, Otago University to test spat movement in different temperatures. A short 2 minumte clip of what goes on from 2016 from Stuff:
